Have you seen Ava Max’s hair, the stylish half-cut that almost looks like something you’d see in a sci-fi movie set in a distant future? Looking at such an extreme hairstyle, you might be wondering whether or not someone would actually commit to spending their day-to-day life looking so eye-grabbing and outrageous, or if it’s just a wig.
Ava Max does not wear a wig, the unique cut is all her own hair and something that she calls the “Max Cut.” The “Max Cut” is an invention completely of her own devising, a hairstyle she feels represents her.
There are no half measures with Max, the only time that she does anything in halves is when she cuts her hair! For Max, her hair isn’t simply a fashion statement, it’s one of the first things about her appearance that she ever felt truly represented her.
So, how can we be sure that it’s not a wig, and just how exactly did she end up with such an outlandish style?
The Max Cut
Before we get started, if you aren’t entirely familiar with the “Max Cut”, then prepare yourself for the shock. It’s how you would imagine your hair would look if you walked out in the middle of a hairstylist doing their job, the kind of hair that makes such a big statement that it’s only wearable by someone with an even bigger personality.
Although it seems a little on the bizarre side, fans have come to love the unique look that she sports, with Max and her “Max Cut” becoming something of a style icon. That doesn’t stop people from poking a little bit of fun, however, such as the many sly comments about her wanting to have her cake and eat it with regards to having short or long hair.
You might still be asking yourself if it’s a wig or not, so let’s turn to Max herself for some confirmation.
Undeniable Evidence
She must have understandably received her fair share of questions about whether or not her hair is a wig, if not because of the style then because of how often she mixes up her hair color from natural tones to a rainbow of pastel. Setting the doubters straight, Max released a video on Instagram proving once and for all that her “Max Cut” was no wig.
It’s for real, folks, as the small clip shows Max rocking her hair and back and forth with vigor, a flurry of strands flying around her face but staying firmly connected to her head. She even addresses the suggestion that it’s a wig directly, posing the question of whether or not it would even be possible to do what she just did in a wig.
The Birth of The Max Cut
Digging through photos of the pop singer, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one where she isn’t showcasing her signature look. Although she doesn’t actually wear a wig, the when and how do oddly relate to wigs.
Alone, doing a little bit of baking, Max was practicing and experimenting with her hairstylist skills on some coloring wigs, in search of a new style. The “Max Cut” was born when she mistakenly only cut half of one of the wigs, resulting in the short but long hybrid that we see today.
Even Max’s mother met the story with incredulity, questioning Max on whether or not a story so seemingly random and zany could have been true. Max stands by her story though, and it does make sense, the impulsiveness and creativity suit her.
Sweet but Psycho
Max actually got the name of her first single, “Sweet but Psycho,” from the new hairstyle. When she looked into the mirror to see the shocking new appearance, she was immediately struck by the fact that whilst she still looked cute, she also looked just a little crazy, giving birth to the single’s title.
In that way, the title and her new look are curiously synchronous in more ways than one, as not only did Max write a song that she felt best represented both sides of her personality, she also ended up with a hairstyle that did the same.
She truly felt herself with the new style, which is why it’s definitely not a wig, and why she has maintained it for so long!
