Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Finnegan Tui recently dropped his brand-new single, “Bones,” via Eywa Music.
Explaining the song, Finnegan says, “‘Bones’ is about the inevitability of growing up. The song yearns for the freedom of youth with the warm guitar strung melody evoking a sense of longing…”
Originally from New Zealand and London-based, Finnegan performed his first gig when he was six years old. After receiving a scholarship to study Jazz and Electronic Music at the Guildhall School of Music, he moved to England, where along with his studies, he played gigs throughout the city, composed orchestral music, exhibited sonic works at Tate Modern and the Barbican, as well as taking commissions from the Museum of London and Channel 4.
In 2021, Finnegan release his debut single, “Once I’m Gone,” followed by working with Matt Lawrence, Charlie Andrew, and Niv Adiri, and is now working on his debut album, Zephyr. His music has gathered acclaim from elite outlets such as Wonderland, Notion, and XS Noize, along with others.
On “Bones,” German composer Robot Koch adds lush layers of electronics, enhancing the tune with luminous washes of intense sound.
Produced by Jasper Trim, “Bones” opens on roaming acoustic guitar tones, topped by Finnegan’s low, haunting voice. As the harmonics escalate, the tune takes on heavy tones and rumbling textures. Koch’s electronic layering imbues the melody with longing leitmotifs, followed by surging emanations of colossal synths.
“And as the sky isn’t mine, you’d think I’d love the land / But I’ll never love what I own I’m a man / I’m as stuck in my ways as a link in a chain / Whilst my heart it is wild, my mind has grown tame.”
Dark and full of trembling, dripping coloration, “Bones” displays the evocative voice and songwriting ability of Finnegan Tui.
