After more than a decade at NBC News, Jeff Rossen is leaving the network.
His contract was up last week, multiple sources told The Hollywood Reporter, and the parties could not come to terms on a new deal. The sticking point, say sources, was Rossen’s aspirations to expand his “Rossen Reports”-branded consumer segments into a multiplatform franchise.
Still, network sources stressed that he is leaving on good terms, with plans for Rossen to stay on until mid-January (his team of producers will continue on at NBC News).
He is still in production on multiple “Rossen Reports” segments, which air on Today and Nightly News, and he will take the “Rossen Reports” trademark with him. His aspirations are to build it beyond television and outside of the NBC News umbrella.
Rossen, 42, began the “Rossen Reports” segment seven years ago. In that time, he has become a fixture on Today. Last year, he penned a book: Rossen to the Rescue: Secrets to Avoiding Scams, Everyday Dangers and Major Catastrophes. The book jacket reminded readers that the author could be found on NBC.
Rossen’s exit will be the latest in a series of on-air changes at the Today show since Matt Lauer was ousted in November 2017, including the elevation of Hoda Kotb alongside flagship co-anchor Savannah Guthrie and, more recently, the addition of Craig Melvin in a regular role on the 7-9 a.m. franchise.
