A 2016 anti-LGBTQ bathroom bill in North Carolina made it illegal to use a bathroom that doesn’t match the sex you were given at birth, so the production moved to South Carolina instead. In 2017, part of the law was taken away. In 2019, a deal was made that said no one can be stopped from using the bathroom that matches their gender identity.
In South Carolina, we see many Charleston locations from previous seasons, like the Camerons’ Tanneyhill estate, which is filmed at the historic Lowndes Grove. Some of our favorite characters travel from the made-up Outer Banks to the Charleston Museum as part of the storyline for this season. The real outside of the Charleston Museum looks a lot like what is shown on the show.
Either the Hilton Barbados Resort, where some of the OBX cast stayed or Charleston, a city in the United States, should be on your travel bucket list.
Outer Banks Show Avoids North Carolina Due to Transgender Bathroom Law
Many fans already know that Outer Banks takes place in a town in North Carolina with the same name. Because of North Carolina’s 2017 House Bill 2, also known as “the bathroom bill,” which says that transgender people must use the bathroom that matches their sex at birth, the producers decided to film the show in South Carolina.
Jonas Pate, the creator of the show and a native of North Carolina, agreed with the decision. He told The Fayetteville Observer, “This tiny law is costing this town 70 good, clean, pension-paying jobs and sending a message to those who can bring these jobs and more that North Carolina still doesn’t get it.”

Places like Pitt Street and The Wreck, where Kie works throughout the series, are real and can be found in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in the Old Village Historic District. You can drive to the beach in 5 minutes, and Charleston Harbor isn’t too far away either. There, you can find the show’s most famous lighthouse, the Morris lighthouse.
You can also go to Shem Creek, which is on OBX and has a boardwalk and a place to launch boats. Even though Sarah’s house isn’t in the Outer Banks, you can see it at Lowndes Grove.

Chase Stokes is back as rebellious teen John B. Routledge, who is in love with wealthy girl Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and is best friends with surfer JJ (Rudy Pankow).
