(CelebrityAccess) — Blippi, a popular YouTuber whose kid-oriented videos have amassed millions of fans on the streaming video service, became the target of criticism over a decision to hire an actor to play the character during live tours.

Stevin John, the creator of the Blippi character, was accused of bait and switch tactics over his decision to use an actor to play the role of Blippi for live appearances.

John, who is 31, told Billboard that the pressures of continuing to create content for YouTube prompted the decision.

“Blippi is as a character and I’m the creative force behind it, but since YouTube is a monster and all of these platforms are really crazy I can’t go on the road for many weeks or months at a time,” John told Billboard.

To be fair, the tour’s website clearly stipulates that Blippi will be portrayed by an actor for live performances.

“Stevin John is the creator of Blippi and acts as the writer and creative force behind the Blippi character. Now that Blippi has evolved as a character he is excited that a dynamic stage performer has been cast as Blippi to entertain and thrill audiences across all of our tour markets.”

“Ticketmaster didn’t seem to have any info about it being an actor on their website. The info is buried on the bottom of the FAQ page on Blippi’s website,” Angelina Sakowski told Buzzfeed.

“I’m livid. I’m trying to get a refund,” added Dana Oliver, who says she paid $400 for sixth-row tickets and a meet & greet at Blippi’s show in Toronto.
